In the summer of 2020 Altus was tasked with transporting a full-scale MH-139 Greywolf helicopter from Eglin AFB, Florida to China Lake, California, more than 2,000 miles and over the road since the aircraft flight certification had expired. This effort was time critical to support Department of Defense testing on this new acquisition aircraft, with the following logistical challenges:

  •  Aircraft had to be mechanically prepared for shipment, including removing the rotor blades and de-servicing the struts to allow for overhead clearance during transport.
  • For surface protection, the entire aircraft needed to be wrapped for transport.
  • Crane services were required to onload the aircraft in Eglin AFB, FL.
  • Transportation was cross country, through several states, and required special oversize load permitting through every state along the route.
  • All of this needed to be done with Altus 2,000 miles away.

Altus’ goal was to find a vendor who could provide a full-service logistics solution to cover all points above and be capable of performing these functions without Altus personnel present at Eglin AFB . Several vendors were contacted with almost all stating they could perform some but not all the functions requested, meaning Altus would likely need to issue multiple contracts and coordinate multiple vendor activities from across the country. Altus then contacted C&S Logistics who provided a quote that could accomplish all requirements, including access of personnel to restricted areas and specialized insurance. They also beat out all others on price.

In September 2020 C&S Logistics was contracted via Purchase Order Approval and they got to work putting together a full-service team, one which could provide proper maintenance, onsite wrapping of the aircraft, crane services, and over the road transportation from Florida to California. Not only did C&S accomplish all requirements as contracted, but they also led the effort onsite in Florida to ensure all team members met their requirements without issue, transported the aircraft cross country in minimal time, and arrived onsite China Lake with zero damage to this valuable asset.

C&S Logistics Inc. was contacted by one of our aviation customers to move a Sikorsky S-76C Helicopter from Fort Lauderdale, FL to Peach Tree City, GA.

The S-76C specs at 14’6” H (blades on) x 52’6” L x 8’ W (over the wheels). Main Rotor measured in at 44’0”. The aircraft weighed in at approximately 10,000lbs. To safely complete this project two trucks were necessary; one to transport the helicopter and one to transport the blade crates.

One of the problems encountered in planning this move was this aircraft is equipped with wheeled landing gear in lieu of skids. Neither the shipper nor the customer owned nor had access to a cradle to fit the aircraft. This special cradle is crucial to safe transport as it helps to secure the wheels to the deck of the trailer and prevents damage the nitrogen shocks. Due to the unavailability of an OEM cradle, C&S Logistics had a cradle was designed and fabricated that would be used to secure the helicopter securely to the deck. The cradle was inspected and approved by a Sikorsky Certified S-76C mechanic and the move went forward.

Necessary state permits and permissions were obtained to move the aircraft and our lead driver met up with one of our owner operators and they proceeded to the airport. At the airport our team met up with the customers team of mechanics who prepped the aircraft for transport. The aircraft was loaded onto the trailer and secured using the cradles that attached to the trailer and used an e-track strap to help hold the aircraft in place.

Once the helicopter was loaded both trucks headed to Peach Tree City where they delivered the following day without issue. Making the custom cradles was imperative to completing this task and we received many compliments on thinking “out of the box”.
